Salony's Award Highlights Early Season Success for Cross Country Teams

ACTION: The Trinity men's cross country team leaving the start line at the UIW Opener meet

SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger cross country teams have completed two meets over the first three weeks of the season, finishing first among NCAA III schools at the opening event, then sweeping the top spots both as a team and individually last weekend.

Trinity has just three weekends of competition remaining before the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the end of October in Georgetown, Texas. The four meets over a three-week span will include trips to Pennsylvania and Illinois, as well as a pair of local meets hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word and Our Lady of the Lake University.

Southwestern Showdown

Trinity's men's and women's cross country teams swept both the team and individual honors at the Southwestern Showdown last week. The race was also a chance for the Tiger runners to preview the course that will be featured at this year's SCAC Championships. The women earned a perfect score of 15 in the race, led by first-year Gianna Keena (Lakeway, Texas / Lake Travis). Keena competed in her first collegiate 6K, shaking off warm and muggy weather and a challenging course. Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) paced Trinity's men for the individual win, while senior Ben Whittemore (Jasper, Texas / Georgetown) finished second on the men's side, followed by Diego Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Great Hearts Monte Vista North) in fourth place. Keena was joined by sophomore Ivanna Hargis (Garland, Texas / Richardson), junior Ellie Catron (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands Christian Academy), junior Madison Habeck (Lake Jackson, Texas / Clute Brazoswood), and senior Lynzie Kutsner (Colorado Springs, Colo / Rampart) in posting the perfect score for the women. Trinity's men's team had 11 runners in the top 20, while the Tiger women took 12 of the top 20 positions.

SCAC Runner of the Week

Salony picked up his second career SCAC Runner of the Week honor after leading the team to victory at the Southwestern Showdown. Salony picked up his first individual collegiate victory as he led the Tiger men to a win with a 20-point score, missing his personal best by a mere 0.02 seconds - despite running on a technically-challenging course along with hot and humid conditions.

From the Coach's Office
"I'm glad we were able to preview the conference course at the Southwestern Showdown last weekend," said Head Coach Emily Daum. "The team definitely got familiar with the technical aspects of the course and put forth a great effort. Having Salony achieve Runner of the Week from his performance was exciting. We'll be utilizing our weekend off from competition to focus on getting in some quality workouts before splitting the team between two competitive meets. We've got a really focused and driven squad right now so it'll be exciting to see how they perform in cooler temperatures over the coming weeks."
Looking Ahead: Recovery, Paul Short Invite/UIW Invite

After using this week to recover from the Showdown, Trinity's men's and women's teams will be split among a pair of meets the following weekend. Select Tigers will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Paul Short Invite on Friday, September 30. The remainder of the squads will stay close to home at the Incarnate Word Invite - held at Live Oak City Park on Saturday, October 1.
