No. 3 Volleyball Stunned by Texas Lutheran in SCAC Semifinal in Colorado
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 3 Trinity University Volleyball was tripped up in Friday afternoon's first semifinal match of the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship against fourth-seeded Texas Lutheran University in five sets: 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-6.
The Tigers (25-4, 16-0 SCAC) and Bulldogs (26-9, 11-5 SCAC) both brought powerful attacks Friday as both teams managed to hit at or above .250 and nearly 13 kills per set each. Trinity had four players all reach double-digits in kills led by senior rightside Sara Flynn (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt) with 15 successful swings to go with a match-high seven blocks which tied her career-high that's been hit two other times this season.
The overall effort in the offensive phase can be credited to senior setter Marisa Amarino (Calabasas, Calif. / Notre Dame) who bested the career-high she set last weekend against Southwestern University with 35 assists against the Bulldogs.
First-year outside hitter Reagan Whatley (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) posted the fourth double-double of the season and her career with 14 kills on a .379 hitting mark to go with 18 digs. Both totals were second-most amongst the Tigers behind Flynn's 15 kills and 21 digs from first-year libero Jenna Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian)
No. 3 Trinity Volleyball will await further instruction from the NCAA early next week as the NCAA III Women's Volleyball Championship tournament selection announcement will be made Monday at Noon CT via livestream on NCAA.com.
