No. 2 Volleyball Course-Corrects with Sweep of Susquehanna

SAN ANTONIO – No. 2 Trinity University Volleyball responded Saturday with a sweep of Susquehanna University (PA) to conclude the non-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of its 2022 campaign, as well as this weekend's Trinity Invitational.

The Tigers (17-3, 8-0 SCAC) saw the first double-double in the career of first-year setter Jozie Dhayer (Houston, Texas / Summer Creek), who led the second-ranked squad with 16 assists and tied classmate, and reigning SCAC Defensive Player of the Week, libero Jenna Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) with 10 digs.

Trinity collected its 10th double-digit performance in team blocks Saturday, led in large part by seniors middle blocker Emily Ellis (Goergetown, Texas / Georgetown) and rightside Sara Flynn (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt) as they took part in eight and six rejections, respectively, out of the Tigers' 13 total blocks.

Flynn also led the way on the attack with 12 kills on an even .500 hitting mark, which influenced Trinity's .350 hitting percentage through the first two frames. Behind eight kills from Ellis and seven from senior rightside Sarah Williamme (Denver, Colo. / East), senior middle blocker Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) tallied six successful strikes on nine error-free swings, all in back-half of the match.

Excluding a first-deficit at 6-5, Trinity led the entire match up to the early going of the third as shuffling of the lineup began. The Tigers rode shotgun through much of the third frame before regaining the lead at 10-9 on a combo block from Ellis and Williammee. The River Hawks snuck in one last tied score at 24-24 after a Trinity timeout before the Tigers finished it out.

No. 2 Trinity Volleyball remains in San Antonio to resume SCAC regular-season action next weekend (Oct. 21-23) as it hosts a six-team league crossover tournament. The Tigers will battle Austin College (Oct. 21), University of Dallas (Oct. 21), Centenary College (Oct. 22) and Colorado College (Oct. 23) while also hosting Schreiner University for a total of 10 matches throughout the weekend.

A midweek battle with the Mountaineers concludes Trinity's seven-match homestand before one final regular-season weekend in Seguin, Texas at Texas Lutheran University.

The 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship will be played on the campus of Colorado College November 4-6 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
