No. 3 Volleyball Sweeps Pair to Conclude Trinity Fall Classic

SAN ANTONIO – No. 3 Trinity University Volleyball swept Region 10 foe University of La Verne (CA) and 2021 NCAA III tournament qualifier University of Scranton (PA) Saturday, bookending the second and final day of the 2022 Trinity Fall Classic.

The Tigers (8-2) collected a breakthrough performance from first-year outside hitter Hallie Martin (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian) who dropped 13 kills on Scranton with a .500 attack clip in tow.

On the day, senior rightside Sarah Williammee (Denver, Colo. / East) led the Tigers with 15 kills and seven blocks, which helped her earn 2022 Trinity Fall Classic Most Valuable Player, the second tournament MVP award in three weekends for the senior.

Senior middle blocker Emily Ellis (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) joined Williammee on the all-Trinity Fall Classic list as she led the Tigers for the weekend with 13 blocks to go along with 13 kills. The former All-American produced eight of those blocks in Friday night's victory over No. 2 Juniata College (PA).

All 17 active Tigers made an appearance in Saturday's nightcap, including the collegiate debuts of Kylee King (Portland, Ore. / Valley Catholic), Keira Lynch (Santa Monica, Calif. / Notre Dame) and Jozie Dhayer (Houston, Texas / Summer Creek).

With the victory over Scranton, Head Coach Julie Jenkins needs just two more victories to reach 1,000 wins as the leader of the Tigers. Last season, Jenkins earned her 1,000th career victory overall in a victory at Centenary College.

No. 3 Trinity Volleyball opens the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season next weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana on Centenary's campus. The Tigers will battle Austin College, the host Ladies and University of Dallas between September 24-25.

Immediate offense was the objective once again for first-year outside hitter Reagan Whatley (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) as she dropped four of her match-high nine kills in the 25-20 opening set.

The Tigers also came up with six of their nine blocks for the match in the first, three apiece attributed to Williammee and junior middle blocker Maddie Fate (New York, N.Y. / Croton on Hudson). Trinity had trailed the Leopards 17-16 before a pair of Whatley kills sparked a 9-3 set-clinching run.

The Tigers control for the duration through back-to-back 25-14 performances. A trio of kills for each of Whatley, Fate and junior outside hitter Mackenzie Logan (Calgary, Canada / Bishop Carroll) helped to force the second set for Trinity while four of Williammee's eight for the match came in the third.

Ellis welcomed the Royals back to Calgaard Gym with three straight kills to open the final match of the weekend, and finished the first set with a perfect five-for-five on the attack, en route to a 25-16 tone-setter. Williammee added four more kills and took part in three of Trinity's four blocks in the frame.

While junior middle blocker Carley Broekhuizen (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Kalamazoo Christian) maintained the offensive efficiency in the middle with three of her career-high six kills on the night, Martin took centerstage with five kills in the 25-12 second set. By this point, all three collegiate debuts—Dhayer, King and Lynch--had already been logged for the Tigers.

Martin commanded the floor again in the third with six more kills to no errors in 11 swings for the 25-15 sweep-clincher, five of which came ahead of the 10-8 mark in the set in favor of Trinity. The Tigers finished on a 7-2 run that featured a pair of Broekhuizen kills and the second Lynch block on the night.
