San Antonio - The 17th-ranked Tiger volleyball team opened its Trinity Invitational Friday with two victories, beating Neumann (PA) University and #15 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX).
Trinity started off with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-23 win over Neumann, then wrapped up the first day of competition by defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 16-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-18.
The Tigers hit .368 in the first set with Neumann, setting the tone for a pair of lopsided wins that put the home team in front 2-0. The third set was much closer, but Trinity was able to finish off the season-opening sweep.
Mary Hardin-Baylor made a bid to beat Trinity on its home floor, pulling out to a big lead and never looking back in the first set.
Despite the loss, the Tigers quickly took control of the match with dominating wins in the second and third sets to make it a 2-1 Trinity lead.
The Crusaders edged ahead late in the fourth and looked like they might force the match to continue, but Trinity rallied to take the win.
Katrina Lieberman racked up 20 assists against Mary Hardin-Baylor and now has 2,314 in her career column.
Lexie Acevdeo led the match with the Crusaders by chalking up 24 assists to go with 10 digs.
Avery Tuggle registered 19 kills and 19 digs to go with a .382 hitting percentage against Mary Hardin-Baylor, collecting her first double-double of the season.
Annie Rose Leggett hit .400 and was credited with nine kills in the opening match with Neumann, then followed that with 18 digs against the Crusaders.
Sami Lin posted a match-high 15 digs against Neumann and 11 more against UMHB.
The Tigers wrap up the tournament Saturday, starting with the University of Minnesota-Morris at 12:30 p.m. and finishing against 25th-ranked College of St. Benedict (MN) at 5:30 p.m.
