Women’s Tennis Claims Space in ITA Regional Quarterfinals
SAN ANTONIO – Six members of Trinity University Women's Tennis are slated to compete in quarterfinal contests in the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships following quality performances recorded in Friday's action.
Sophomore Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and first-year Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) moved into the quarterfinals for both the singles and doubles brackets after dominating performances in the second and third rounds of individual play in the morning, followed by a combined four shutout performances in doubles with their respective partners, sophomore Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and junior Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage).
Hill completed straight sets victories over a pair of representatives from Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Southwestern University in Friday's early session, in tallies of 6-1, 6-2 over the Pirates' Daryl Locke and 6-1, 6-1 over Kimberly Duncan.
Levy's impressive introduction to the intercollegiate circuit continued Friday knocking off the West's No. 13 singles player from 2021, Nina Mitrofanova of Southwestern, with marks of 6-3 and 6-2 after taking down Elyssa Ducret of University of Texas-Dallas in back-to-back 6-4 sets.
Cushing and Kim each advanced into the singles round of 16 before their respective bids for regional supremacy came to an end. Undeterred, both Tigers went on to join their respective partners for back-to-back shutout victories in the doubles bracket.
Joining the aforementioned quartet in the doubles quarterfinal action is the junior duo of Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen). Results of 8-6 over Hardin-Simmons University's Priscilla Schimming and Skylar Rust and 8-4 over Southwestern's Daryl Locke and Sydney Wahl placed the third Trinity duo into one of the next four contests in the doubles championship quest.
Junior Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia) and sophomore Trinity Hatchett (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) remain at large in the championship consolation bracket. Hatchett put up back-to-back straight-sets victories en route to the consolation quarterfinals over entries from Howard Payne University and East Texas Baptist University. Cummings advanced to the consolation round of 16 via walkover, then rallied from a 6-3 setback in her first frame on a 10-5 superbreaker following a 6-4 second set output.
Hill and Levy open Saturday's competition at the Butch Newman Tennis Center at 8 a.m., each taking on another Southwestern entry in the ITA Regional Singles Championship Quarterfinals. Doubles action kicks off in the afternoon, scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
