Seven Tigers Advance through ITA Regional Women's Tennis First-Round Singles
SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Women's Tennis opened the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships Thursday evening with the opening round of Championship Draw singles. The Tigers posted seven victories across the roster in the event's first day, all in straight sets and only one needed a breaker.
In the early session that began under the south Texas sun at 3:00 p.m., junior Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and sophomore Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) got the ball rolling with victories of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 7-5, taking down a pair of entries from the American Southwest Conference in Howard Payne University and LeTourneau University, respectively.
Three quick-work performances highlighted the middle 4:30 p.m. session. Junior Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville) kept the first day's events on schedule with a swift 6-0, 6-3 decision over Trinity Klamecki of Concordia University. Classmate Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen) and rookie Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) each also posted a shutout set in victories over representatives of Texas Lutheran University and East Texas Baptist University.
For the nightcap, sophomore Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) posted a 6-4, 6-0 performance over Megan Zeng of University of Texas-Dallas and junior Constanza Gomez (San Jose, Costa Rica / Blue Valley) added a 6-2, 7-6 mark over Schreiner University's Blair Drought-Villareal.
The second round of championship singles begins at 8:00 a.m. Friday, at both the Newman Tennis Center and the Al G. Hill Tennis Stadium. Draws B-D of singles competition will take place at the Blossom Tennis Center to the north of campus. Championship doubles competition will be played entirely on the campus sites, with the first round opening at 4:00 p.m.
