Women’s Tennis to Host ITA Southwest Regional; Fall Season Round-Up
SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University Women's Tennis is set to host the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships this weekend, featuring 15 NCAA III institutions from the state of Texas. Nearly 130 players have been entered into this weekend's competition, featuring 64-player championship singles and doubles draws.
All 11 Tigers will take part in the championship bracket for singles, as well as five doubles teams. Trinity returns all but one member of the 2021-22 squad, including three players that finished the 2022 spring campaign ranked by the ITA: sophomores Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and junior Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage). Kim ended last season ranked 39th nationally while Hill and Cushing were ranked 19th and 20th, respectively, in the West. As a duo, Kim and Hill were ranked No. 13 in the West as well.
Trinity is one of three teams in this weekend's tournament that finished the 2022 campaign ranked by the ITA. The Tigers finished No. 16, followed by Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe No. 20 Southwestern University and No. 24 University of Texas-Dallas—the fourth, seventh and sixth-ranked teams in the region. The Pirates return all of its regionally-ranked players and doubles teams from last season while the Comets return one ranked singles player and one-half of their regionally-ranked doubles team.
The opening round of the championship draw singles will be played Thursday on Trinity's campus between the Butch Newman Tennis Center and the Al G. Hill Tennis Stadium beginning at 3 p.m. The first round of the championship doubles draw begins Friday afternoon on campus. Finals for both the singles and doubles championship brackets will be played Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Fall Season Catch-Up: St. Mary's Invitational (Sept. 2-3)
Trinity took part in the annual St. Mary's round-robin style tournament again in 2022, putting up overall records of 18-13 in singles, 9-5 in doubles amongst competition that ranged across all three divisions of the NCAA.
Cushing and first-year Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) captured the victory in the second group of Flight B doubles including a 6-1 victory over the NCAA II duo of the Rattlers. Cushing also put up a 2-1 record in Flight C singles including a 6-3, 6-3 victory over St. Mary's Elena Munoz.
Hill and Kim went 2-1 in their Flight A group, defeating the NCAA II entry from Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-1. Hill also picked up a pair of victories in her Flight A group including a straight-sets shutout of Saskia Vogelzang of Our Lady of the Lake University.
Juniors Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia) and Constanza Gomez (San Jose, Costa Rica / Blue Valley) came away from the St. Mary's Invitational undefeated in singles play, winning their group in Flights F and H, respectively. The duo combined to defeat a pair of entries of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foes Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University, while Cummings's third victory came over OLLU's Melanie Guzman, 6-2, 6-2.
Also, with a pair of victories in hand were juniors Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen) and sophomore Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) between Flights D and E.
