Trinity Women’s Tennis Splits Matches in Home Debut

San Antonio - The 18th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team split its dual matches Saturday in the Tigers home debut at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.


The Tigers lost 7-0 to NCAA Division II member St. Edward's (TX) University. Trinity opened its Division III campaign with an 8-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas (TX) in the second match of the day.

Trinity stands at 1-3 overall and is 1-0 in DIII competition. St. Edward's improved to 4-0 on the season, while St. Thomas dropped to 0-3.

Playing under DII rules, the only win for the Tigers against 16th-ranked St. Edward's was at #1 doubles as Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen won their matchup 6-4.

Megan Flores and Paulina Garcia lost the second line, and Ashley DeBauge and Francesca Canjar fell in the third as the Hilltoppers won the doubles point.

DeBauge played the tightest match in singles, coming up short 7-6, 3-6, 4-10 on the second line.


The match with St. Thomas was a different story as the Tigers swept the doubles competition. The Kaffen twins won the first line and improved their doubles record to 2-1.

Flores and Garcia were victorious in the second doubles match, and DeBauge and Canjar took the third.

Trinity won five of the six singles matches. DeBauge moved into the top slot for a win, Garcia was the winner of #3 singles, Markiewicz took line four, Mary Kaffen was victorious in the fifth, and Maddee Williams Koeller was a straight-sets winner at #6.

Canjar came up short at #2 singles and was edged 6-4 in the second set.



The Tigers start a three-match Division III swing to the Northwest on Friday, February 21st, taking on Lewis & Clark (OR) College in Portland, Oregon.
