Trinity Women's Soccer Dazzles In Season Opener
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Trinity University women's soccer team opened up its 2022 campaign with a dominant 4-1 win over Fontbonne University. First-year forward Hanna Khan (Southlake, TX / Southlake Carroll) scored the Tigers first goal of the season as well as the first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore forward Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) added two goals while senior forward Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood) also found the back of the net.
Trinity outshot the Griffins 16-to-9 and also took five corner kicks compared to their two corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, TX / Creekview) earned the win in goal for the Tigers. She recorded two save on three shots.
The Tigers were on the attack early and often throughout the match. Trinity took the first corner of the afternoon in the fifth minute of the match but could not capitalize. A few minutes later, Bosco took the Tiger's first shot of the season but the Fontbonne keeper ultimately saved it. Four different Tigers fired away a show with one of them being on target. Still tied 0-0, Trinity took their second corner kick of the day but came up empty.
In the 32nd minute of the match, Khan subbed in and provided the Tigers with the spark they were looking for. The rookie quickly took a shot that was saved by the keeper but followed the rebound and found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Fontbonne finally took their first shot of the day in the 42nd minute of the match but Lewis stepped in front of it to tally her first save of the season. Both teams took one more shot before ending the first half.
The Tigers wasted no time extending their lead coming out of the break. Bosco found the back of the net two minutes into the second half on an assist from Khan to take a 2-0 lead. Fontbonne answered with a goal of their own in the 52nd minute to cut the lead in half. The Griffins followed that up by taking two more shots that were off frame.
Late in the match, the Tigers put the match away by scoring two goals in under two minutes. Sheridan scored Trinity's third point of the match on a beautifully placed ball by junior midfielder Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian) on the Tigers final corner kick of the afternoon. In the blink of an eye, Bosco scored the Tigers fourth and final goal of the match thanks to an assist from Sheridan.
"We played well and created a number of good chances early but couldn't open up the game," said Head Coach Dylan Harrison. "It wasn't until after halftime when we told the team only winners get toasted raviolis and St. Louis style ribs.
The Tigers will look to ride the momentum of today's 4-1 win over Fontbonne as they take on No. 11 Washington University at 12:00 pm on Sunday.
