Tiger Women's Basketball Defeats Hardin-Simmons

San Antonio – Trinity's women's basketball team defeated Hardin-Simmons (TX) University 77-68 on Sunday night.


The Tigers scored the first seven points of the game, but Hardin-Simmons eventually battled back to tie the game 14-14 with 2:17 left in the first quarter. Trinity got the final bucket of the quarter in the last minute to take a 19-17 lead after one.

The two teams went back and forth for first few minutes of the second quarter, but Hardin-Simmons was unable to take the lead until the 6:34 mark when Trinity was called for two technical fouls. The Tigers and Cowgirls continued to trade the lead the rest of the quarter, and Trinity once again got the last points of the half to take a 36-33 lead at the break.

The third quarter was more of the same early on, but Trinity broke a 42-42 tie with six straight points to take its biggest lead at the time. Hardin-Simmons got to within two with 2:18 left, but the Tigers outscored the Cowgirls 8-2 to close the quarter with a 56-48 lead.

Trinity grew the lead to double figures early in the fourth and led by as many as 12 points with 5:36 left in the game. Hardin-Simmons got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.



Trinity improves to 2-1 this season with the win, handing Hardin-Simmons (3-1) its first loss of the year.

Emily Daniel led all scorers with 24 points on 9-15 shooting overall and 4-8 from three-point range. She also picked up three assists and a pair of steals in the game.

Abby Holland hit 9-18 from the field on her way to a 20-point night, picking up three rebounds and two steals as well. Tonight marked her second straight game with at least 20 points.

Hailey Coleman was the only other Tiger player to reach double figures with 14 points on 6-8 shooting. She also led the team with eight rebounds and tied Kelly Simmons for the team lead with three steals.

Jordan Rudd dished out a game-leading eight assists to go with seven rebounds, and Sam Henry and Simmons each chipped in with seven points off the bench.

Trinity shot better than 50% from the field in the game, holding Hardin-Simmons under 45% shooting. The Tiger defense also collected 14 steals and forced 21 total turnovers.



The Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 23, hitting the road to take on East Texas Baptist University at 1:00 p.m.
