Trinity Women’s Basketball Edged by Texas Lutheran

Seguin, Texas - The Trinity women's basketball team's 10-game win streak was snapped as the Tigers were edged 70-66 by Texas Lutheran University Saturday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.



Trinity never led in the game as Texas Lutheran opened up with what would be its highest-scoring quarter of the night.

The Bulldogs scored 11 of the first 15 points and led by as many as 10 points (18-8) in the closing minutes of the period. After scoring a layup at the 2:54 mark of the first quarter, the Tigers were held to just two more points the rest of the way and the visitors trailed 22-14 after one.

Trinity continued to struggle in the second quarter, hitting just one shot in nearly four minutes of action and falling behind by 12 points. After drawing within 10 with a basket at the 6:05 mark, Trinity gave up back-to-back three-pointers and the lead was 34-18 in favor of Texas Lutheran.

The Bulldogs pushed that lead to 20 points in the final minute of the first half, but Trinity hit a pair of three-pointers in the final 41 seconds to make it a 40-26 game at the break.

Trinity finally made its move late in the third quarter, scoring the final five points of the period to cut the lead to 13 points (59-46) heading into the final period.

After Texas Lutheran scored a three-pointer to start the fourth and push the lead to 16 points, the Tigers answered with its best run of the game. Trinity put together a 15-2 run that began with nine unanswered points and made it a 64-61 Texas Lutheran lead with 2:17 remaining.

After the teams traded baskets on the next three possessions, Trinity hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds left to cut the lead to just two at 68-66. Texas Lutheran made just 1-2 at the line after the Tigers fouled, but Trinity missed a game-tying three with under 10 seconds left and the Bulldogs escaped with the win.



The Tigers now stand at 15-4 on the season and 8-2 in SCAC competition. Texas Lutheran improved to 12-7 and 8-2 in conference play. Trinity beat Texas Lutheran 70-45 on January 5 in Calgaard Gym.

Abby Holland led the game with 21 points, her seventh 20-point matchup of the campaign. Holland shot 6-15 from the field, 2-4 in three-point range, and made 7-10 free throws. She also pulled in five rebounds and tied for the team's lead with four steals.

Emily Daniel contributed 17 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Julia Ackerman and Sam Henry each chipped in six points, while Henry also chalked up four steals.

Kelly Simmons pulled in seven boards to go with five points, and Jordan Rudd led the Tigers with five assists in her column.

Trinity forced 23 TLU turnovers and led 20-13 in points off the takeaways. The Tigers shot 32% from the field and the Bulldogs hit 58% of their shots.



The Tigers will host Schreiner (TX) University in an SCAC game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
