Coach McMindes and Mayer Lead Tiger All-SCAC Selections

San Antonio - Trinity men's tennis Head Coach Russell McMindes and senior Chas Mayer headline the latest honors from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Coach McMindes was elected the SCAC Men's Coach of the Year, and Mayer was named the SCAC Men's Player of the Year. Voting was conducted exclusively among conference head coaches.

As a result of the voting, Coach McMindes now holds at least a share of Coach of the Year accolades for the seventh time in his eight-year tenure. Coach McMindes guided the 13th-ranked Tigers to an eighth consecutive SCAC Championship. Trinity (16-10) beat Southwestern (TX) University 5-1 for the title on April 30 at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.

Trinity captured its 22nd overall SCAC Championship, the most garnered by one team in any sport in conference history. The Tigers also earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, starting next weekend at Claremont, California. Up first will be a match with 14th-ranked Whitman (WA) College, on a day and time to be determined.

Mayer was elected to the All-SCAC Team for the third time in his collegiate career. He advanced to the singles final last fall at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional. Mayer is ranked 10th in the West Region in singles, and 14th in doubles. This season, Mayer stands at 10-8 in singles, and 17-4 in doubles.

The Tigers have been highly successful in picking up Player of the Year honors, as this marks the 20th time a Trinity student-athlete has garnered the award.

Joining Mayer on the All-SCAC Team were four of his Tiger teammates. Junior Matt Tyer and sophomore Wilson Lambeth were elected for the second time. Jordan Pitts earned All-SCAC honors in his first year as a Trinity Tiger, while senior Clayton Niess made the All-SCAC Honorable Mention Team.
