Tyler, Texas - Eight Trinity main-draw singles players and four doubles teams advanced at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships on Saturday.
Reaching the doubles quarterfinals were the #2 tandem of Tyer and Lambeth, fourth seeds Mayer and Niess, and #7 Pitts and Paul Bhatia. The unseeded team of Crawley and Cameron Bilsbarrow also advanced to the final eight.
McKenna Fujitani upset third-seeded Niko Snovely of Southwestern (TX) University 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 in the first round, then defeated Cameron McCarthy of UT-Tyler.
Clayton Niess defeated Ryan Elwood of the host University of Texas-Tyler in a second-round thriller, by scores of 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-5.
Kevin Lee outfought Sebastian Richard of the University of the Ozarks (AR) 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 in the first round, before besting Pieter Cabato of Austin (TX) College in the second round.
Liam Crawley took out ninth-seeded Dean Dulthumonn of Southwestern 6-4, 6-1.
A highlight of the second round of doubles occurred when Crawley and Cameron Bilsbarrow defeated top seeds Snovely and Grant Gideon of Southwestern 8-1.
The action begins at 8:00 a.m. Sunday. The singles main-draw third round and quarterfinals will be played. The doubles quarterfinals and semifinals are on the slate. There are also "B" and "C" Singles, and consolation draws.
