SAN ANTONIO - Junior Joseph Kuri (San Antonio, TX / TMI Episcopal) recorded his first career hit trick to help the Tigers improve to 2-0 in conference play. The Trinity Men's Soccer team defeated Southwestern University 3-1 to improve to an overall record of 4-2-2 while the Pirates fall to 3-4-2 on the season.
While attacking, senior Chen Adjei (Euless, TX / Trinity) drew a penalty in the box and earned a penalty kick. Kuri was called on to take the penalty kick and buried it to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the match.
A few minutes later, Southwestern took a throw-in near the Trinity goal and put a shot on frame that was saved. In the 24th minute, a handball occurred in the penalty box while on the attack. SU was awarded a penalty kick and scored to make the score 1-1. The half ended with sophomore Hunter Cain (Katy, TX / Cinco Ranch) ripping a shot that was just off target. The Tigers put up five shots in the first half which was just one more than the Pirates.
Southwestern immediately put up two shots to start the second half. Adjei then put a ball on target but it was saved by the Pirate keeper.
In the 66th minute, the Tigers took a free kick just outside the box. Sophomore Greysen Golgert (Allen, TX / Allen) rose up and put his head on it but it was a bit too high. Kuri later found the back of the net for his second goal of the afternoon on an assist from Adjei to take a 2-1 lead with about 24 minutes left in the match.
Kuri received a service from senior Fraser Burns (Dalry, Scotland / Garnock Academy) and navigated through multiple defenders before scoring his third goal of the day to extend the Trinity lead to 3-1 with 20 minutes to play. The Tigers continued to fire in shots but did not find the back of the net for the rest of the match. The Trinity backline did manage to hold the Pirates to zero shots after scoring the final goal of the afternoon.
Trinity outshot Southwestern 18-6 on the afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse School) earned his second shutout win in goal this season.
Kuri led both sides in shots taken with four.
With the Women's 6-0 victory over Dallas, Michaela Bosco and Kuri have posted a hat trick in both the women's and men's matches on the same day since September 22, 2017.
The Tigers will look to erase their 0-3-1 record and pick up their first road win of the season. Trinity will travel to North Texas to take on Austin College and the University of Dallas next weekend.
