Trinity Edges Texas Lutheran 1-0 in SCAC Road Game

Seguin, Texas – Trinity's men's soccer team earned a 1-0 road shutout over Texas Lutheran University in Sunday's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

 

MATCH SUMMARY

The Tigers held a large advantage in overall shots (21-8) and shots on goal (7-2), but the only score of the day came in the 32nd minute of play.

Wesley Mitchell had three shots in roughly five minutes, and his third found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead at the 31:23 mark. Philip Duenez provided the assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Both teams had on-target shots in the first 15 minutes of play, and the Tigers had three shots on goal by the 22nd minute.

Trinity's final shot of the first half nearly led to a Texas Lutheran goal. After Jake Simon's shot was saved, the Bulldogs countered quickly and fired a shot off the left post. That near-miss left it a 1-0 Tiger lead at the half.

The Tigers out-shot the Bulldogs 12-4 in the first half, forcing five Texas Lutheran saves.

Texas Lutheran got its second – and final – shot on goal early in the second half, but Blake Lieberman came up with his second save of the game to keep the home team scoreless.

Trinity allowed just three shots the rest of the game to secure the win.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity won for the seventh time in the last eight games, improving to 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-0 in SCAC play. Texas Lutheran falls to 10-5-0 and 4-2-0 in conference – with the Tigers handing the Bulldogs both losses.

The win marks the sixth consecutive for Trinity in the series, and the Tigers are 32-5-1 all-time against Texas Lutheran.

Wesley Mitchell scored his first goal of the season for the Tigers on Sunday, becoming the 15th different Trinity player to score a goal this year.

Philip Duenez notched his second assist of the year, and he is second on the Trinity team with 10 total points in 13 games played.

Blake Lieberman secured his second shutout in the last three games, which are also his only shutouts of the season so far.
