Trinity Men's Soccer Scores 2-1 Road Win Over Southwestern

Georgetown, Texas – The Tiger men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Southwestern (TX) University on Friday night.

MATCH SUMMARIES

The two teams were locked in a defensive struggle for most of the first half as neither team was able to produce much on offense. Both teams had just four shots heading into the final 15 minutes of the period, though two of Southwestern's shots were on goal.

In the final 10 minutes of the period, Trinity's offense came to life with four corner kicks and three total shots – including two shots on goal.

The Tigers had a shot cleared off the line by a defender in the 40th minute, then saw Southwestern record another save in the 43rd to keep the game scoreless at the half.

The late push gave Trinity a 7-4 edge in shots for the period, as well as an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Trinity kept the momentum going in the second half, including a shot off the post by Philip Duenez in the 55th minute of action.

Blake Lieberman picked up his third save of the game less than five minutes later to keep the game tied 0-0.

In the 67th minute, Trinity finally broke the tie with a goal from Jack Downes. Downes scored on an assist from Duenez to put the Tigers on top 1-0.

Andrea Codispoti had another on-target shot for the Tigers just over a minute later, but Southwestern once again got a team save as a defender cleared the ball off the line to keep it a 1-0 game.

With time ticking down, a Southwestern foul led to a free kick from Downes that cleared the Southwestern wall and found the back of the net for a 2-0 Trinity lead with exactly four minutes remaining.

Southwestern spoiled the shutout with just five seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough to keep the Tigers from victory.

NOTABLES

Trinity improved to 7-3-2 on the year overall, including a 3-1 mark in the SCAC. Southwestern fell to 8-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference.

The Tigers have gone 14 games without a loss in the series against the Pirates, with the only blemish being a tie in last year's SCAC Championship game. Trinity won a penalty shootout in that game to secure the SCAC title.

Jack Downes scored his first goals of the season in today's game and is the 14th Tiger player to score a goal this season. He is also the sixth player to score a game-winner for Trinity this year.

Philip Duenez picked up his first assist of the season in the win and he is second on the team with nine total points.

Goalkeeper Blake Lieberman narrowly missed a shutout, recording three saves against eight total shots in his 90 minutes of action.
