Tiger Football Edged by Field Goal as Time Expired

San Antonio - The Trinity football team opened up Southern Athletic Association play with a narrow 10-7 loss to Millsaps (MS) College on Saturday afternoon.

Millsaps hit a game-winning field goal from 25 yards out as time expired to earn the victory.

The game was marred by muddy field conditions and 11 total fumbles by the two teams.

Trinity took the opening kickoff and marched 61 yards in just four plays for what would prove to be its only score of the game.

Quarterback Timmy Ware hit wide receiver Tommy Lavine for a 49-yard touchdown throw to put the Tigers up 7-0.

Millsaps drove into the red zone on its first possession, but turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert on 4th-and-11 from the 19 yard line.

Both teams got bogged down by rainy weather and a sloppy field after that and the teams traded punts until the middle of the second quarter.

Trinity actually lined up for a punt with just over nine minutes left until the half, but the snap was fumbled and Millsaps took over at the Tiger 16 yard line. The Majors punched it in on the next play to tie the game 7-7.

The Tiger defense forced fumbles on the next two possessions, but Trinity's offense wasn't able to get anything going the rest of the half.

The action slowed again after halftime and both teams traded punts into the fourth quarter.

Trinity pinned the Majors back late in the fourth quarter and forced a punt that gave the Tigers the ball back at midfield.  Trinity failed to convert on 4th-and-2, though, and Millsaps got the ball back with just over five minutes remaining.

The defense stood tall once again for Trinity as Vail Miesfeld picked off a pass at the Tiger 36 yard line to put the offense back on the field with 3:39 to play.

The Tigers drove towards midfield, but a fumble on third down put the ball back in the hands of the visitors, and Millsaps drove inside the Trinity 10 yard line on just four plays.

The Majors were unable to punch it in, but still managed to run out the clock to set up the winning kick as the clock hit zero.

Trinity falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in SAA play, while Millsaps remains undefeated at 3-0, 1-0 SAA.

Evan McDowell finished with 97 yards rushing on 22 carries to lead all players.

Wyatt Messex and Timmy ware both threw for 49 total yards in the game, with Ware tossing the only touchdown of the game for the Tigers.

Tommy Lavine caught three passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Stewart had three receptions for 32 yards.

Trinity's defense held Millsaps to just 242 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers.

Kievan Boudreaux finished with 13 total tackles and a forced fumble for the second consecutive game.

Michael Inco had eight total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, while Nic Hover had seven stops for the Tigers.

Vail Miesfeld had six solo tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

Trinity will be off next weekend, then returns home to take on Birmingham-Southern (AL) College in another SAA contest, which begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29.
