Austin, Texas – The third-ranked Tiger baseball team finished off its part in the Concordia Classic with a 6-3 win over LeTourneau (TX) University on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity struck first with a run in the second, keyed by Jack Vonderhaar's leadoff triple. LeTourneau came back with a three-run third inning to take the 3-1 lead, but the Tigers tied things up on Michael Herrera's solo homer and an RBI double from Vonderhaar.
The Tigers scored twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth to break the tie and take a 6-3 lead. LeTourneau stranded three combined runners in the seventh and eighth, then tried to rally to tie the game in the ninth.
After the first two runners got on base, the next two batters flew out. A two-out walk put the tying run on first, but Trinity pitcher Cadhan McGahan got a strikeout to end the threat and seal the Tiger win.
The Tigers remain unbeaten at 4-0 this season, while LeTourneau falls to 3-3 after a pair of losses to Trinity this weekend.
Jack Vonderhaar was one of four Trinity players with two hits in the game, going 2-3 with two runs scored. Both of his hits were for extra bases, collecting a double and a triple.
Cadhan McGahan (1-0) pitched 5.2 shutout innings of relief to earn his first collegiate win, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters.
Trinity will make its 2020 home debut with a three-game series against Endicott (MA) College next weekend, beginning Friday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m.
