Third-Ranked Tiger Baseball Holds off Millikin on Tuesday

San Antonio - The third-ranked Trinity baseball team held off a late rally to defeat Millikin (IL) University 11-9 Tuesday.

Millikin grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, despite not getting a hit in the opening frame. Trinity committed two of its four errors in the game during the inning, leading to the quick deficit.

The Tigers answered immediately with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning, as Rafe Chaumette drove in the tying run and Mason Meredith's single to center gave Trinity a 2-1 lead.

Millikin drew two walks to start the second inning, then used a single and a sacrifice fly to reclaim the lead 3-2.

The back-and-forth game continued in the bottom of the inning, as Jack Wisniewski stroked a double to left center to tie the game, then came around to score the go-ahead run one batter later. The big blow of the inning came after Trinity strung together its last three hits with two outs, the last of which was a three-run home run from Michael Goodrich.

The Tigers got five more hits in the third, scoring three more runs to push the lead to 10-3. That proved to be the last hit Trinity would get until the eighth inning, as Millikin chipped away at the Tiger lead over the next several innings.

The Big Blue got single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh to make it a 10-7 game. Trinity's only base runner during that time came on a one-out walk in the seventh.

In the eighth, Millikin rally continued as the visitors took advantage of two more Tiger errors to score two runs and trim the lead to 10-9.

Logan Morrison started off the eighth with a single to center, coming around to score a key insurance run on Rafe Chaumette's RBI single to right-center that gave Trinity an 11-9 advantage.

Millikin put the tying run on base with two outs, but Trinity's Jeff Lonnecker finished off a three-inning save with a strikeout that ended the game.

The Tigers won their fifth straight game and upped their record to 12-3. Millikin lost its fourth consecutive game and dropped to 1-7.

Logan Morrison went 3-5 at the plate with an RBI and tied a team season-high by scoring three runs.

Rafe Chaumette hit 3-5 with three RBI and scored a run.

Michael Goodrich had a pair of hits, including his team-best third home run of the season.

Blake Johnson and Jack Wisniewski had a double among two hits each. Johnson scored two runs and drove in another, while Wisniewski had a run scored to go with two RBI.

Corey Cater (3-0) earned the win with three innings pitched in relief, striking out five batters and allowing just one run.

Jeff Lonnecker recorded his second save of the season by pitching the final three innings of the game. He yielded three runs (one earned) on four hits and recorded five strikeouts.

The Tiger pitching staff recorded a team season-high 15 strikeouts.
